YouTube: Tips to Increase Efficiency

Uncategorized

After the Google takeover, YouTube has consolidated its position as market leader. The website records 3 billion views per day, but not all users know how to use all its useful options to maximum.

Here are some tips for efficient use of YouTube:

“Large Player” and HD

When you do not want to watch a video in full screen, but you’d prefer a higher resolution, you can try the option “Large Player”, which eliminates the right column and increases the viewing area. If you want all clips to automatically load in HD format, you can adjust the options in “Playback Setup”, from the “Settings” menu.

Leanback

The “Leanback” option has been introduced for users of smart TVs, but you can also enjoy it on your PC. Thanks to it, you can navigate easier and more elegant over the playlists and YouTube channels.

Captions

Viewing the “Captions” messages while watching video clips can be easily optimized by any registered user; you can change the font, its size and colors, through the “Settings” button visible after clicking “CC”.

History and Favorites

Find easily any clip already viewed or delete from “History” clips that you do not want to be visible. Click on your name in the top right corner and enter the “Video Manager”. You can optimize “My Viewing History” and you can edit the list of “Favorites” and “Watch Later”.

Keyboard Shortcuts

The mouse is not the only way to control the player while viewing a video on YouTube. Use the keyboard shortcuts for easier navigation. The “Space” key can pause or resume video, and with left and right arrows you can browse the clip and with up and down arrows you can control the volume.

Search Options

Besides quotation marks, YouTube offers other useful search options. You can use “intitle: x” when you want to find results with X in the title and you can narrow your search by adding terms such as “HD” or “3D”. Add “long” in your search for videos longer than 20 minutes and “short” for videos shorter than 4 minutes.

YouTube Slam

The game developed by YouTube lets you choose your favorite between two similar videos. Try “YouTube Slam” in the “Try Something New” menu, at the bottom of the page.

Foreign Languages

You don’t need a special keyboard to search videos in languages using different alphabet. Change the language at the bottom of the screen and you will have available a small virtual keyboard to enter characters from the Greek alphabet as well as Arabic, Cyrillic and many more.
